Annual wellness visits

Your primary care provider keeps you on track with preventative care through annual wellness checks and screenings. Even if you’re not experiencing symptoms, it’s important to get your annual wellness check and recommended screenings so that you and your provider can catch conditions early on when they may be easier to treat. Your provider will order screenings for you based on a few factors like your age, family history and lifestyle.

Annual screenings

Ages to start screening

Why it’s important

Wellness visit

Pediatric and adult annual wellness visits are recommended for all ages. Many insurance plans cover these visits at little or no cost. Check with your provider for details.

Some medical conditions that require early detection, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol might have no symptoms at all. This makes an annual visit with your provider vital to maintaining good health.

Mammograms

Annual mammograms are recommended between the ages of 40 and 54. For ages 55 and older, you can do yearly or bi-yearly screenings.

Early detection means less invasive treatment can be started right away, leading to life-saving outcomes.

Cervical cancer

Routine cervical cancer screenings generally begin at age 21 depending on the method of screening chosen and end at age 65 for most women.

The American Cancer Society recommends regular screenings to detect cervical cancer early so that any precancerous cells can be found and removed.

Colorectal cancer

Start regular screening at 45, and continue until 75.

Screening helps find colorectal cancer before symptoms develop, making it easier to treat and increasing your chances of a full recovery.

Primary care frequently asked questions

A primary care provider helps you stay healthy by giving regular check-ups, treating illnesses and helping you manage long-term conditions. As you get to know your general practitioner, they’ll have a detailed understanding of your health history that will help them give you the personalized care you need.

You can schedule an appointment with our providers by calling (423) 542‑7420 or booking your visit online. If there is any reason our office doesn’t align with your needs, you can use our find-a-doctor tool to find a primary care provider near you.

It’s a good idea to see your primary care doctor or provider at least once a year for a check-up. If you have any health problems or concerns, you might need to visit more often. Your PCP can tell you how often you should come in based on your health needs.

Your primary care provider is always here to help you manage your health. Your PCP will be your main point of contact in your healthcare journey, and they can give you advice on healthy living, catch health problems early and make sure you get the right tests and preventive screenings. They can also help you make a plan to stay healthy through diet, exercise and appropriate medications.

During your first visit, one of our Elizabethton providers will ask about your health history, do a physical exam and talk with you about any health concerns you have. This is their chance to get to know you and your health goals. They will also discuss any medicines you take and may order some tests based on the needs you tell them about.

To choose the right PCP, think about what’s important to you. Things like location, office hours and insurance are important factors when choosing your PCP.

Ballad Health Medical Associates Family Medicine accepts most major insurance providers. To confirm if we accept your insurance, please call us at (423) 542‑7420.

If you require care when our office is closed, you can go to the nearest urgent care or utilize our virtual urgent care clinic. For virtual visits, you can choose between a quick screening or a video visit with a provider.
