Ballad Health’s Center for Spiritual Health provides accredited pastoral education and training at Johnson City Medical Center, a Level I Trauma facility.

Our Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program combines the practice of spiritual care with qualified supervision and peer group reflection.

To help deepen and broaden the capacity to minister and to serve, CPE incorporates supervised reflection of the:

  • Student's theology
  • Personal and clinical experience
  • Interpersonal dynamics
  • Spiritual pilgrimage

About the CPE Training Program

Our Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) accredited resident chaplain and intern program consists of a minimum 400 hours of supervised ministry. Approximately 300 hours of the student's time will be spent in direct, on-site, clinical ministry: a combination of on-call ministry and clinical ministry assignments in a specific clinical area of a hospital or community setting. The remaining minimum of 100 hours of structured education are comprised of individual and group supervision, didactic seminars, verbatim and clinical case presentations, and other education experiences in the following core areas of pastoral formation:

  • Pastoral theology
  • Grief and loss
  • Developmental and behavioral theories
  • Group and systems theory
  • Bioethics
  • Cultural and pastoral identity formation
  • Level I and level II consultations
  • Providing spiritual care to all

A team of experienced, board-certified staff chaplains support CPE students as they learn.

Program schedule

Our residency program operates on a staggered year, with new students accepted every calendar quarter. We also offer an extended unit of CPE that is especially designed for local pastors from September through May.

In addition to our residency program at JCMC, we offer a summer intensive internship.

Accreditation

Johnson City Medical Center is fully accredited for Level I/Level II and Supervisory CPE by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE).
