Pharmacy Residency Programs at Johnson City Medical Center
The Department of Pharmacy Services at Johnson City Medical Center (JCMC) offers a Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency and a Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Critical Care Pharmacy Residency. The programs follow the guidelines and accreditation standard of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
Johnson City Medical Center is a 445-bed tertiary referral center located in Northeastern Tennessee. JCMC is one of five Level 1 Trauma Centers in the state of Tennessee and is a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center. JCMC is part of Ballad Health, an integrated healthcare delivery system serving 29 counties in Northeastern Tennessee, Southwestern Virginia, Northwestern North Carolina, and Southeastern Kentucky.
Program details
The department of pharmacy services has a progressive practice model with centralized clinical pharmacists, decentralized clinical pharmacists, and clinical pharmacy specialists. Pharmacy practice is supported by computerized prescriber order entry, an integrated electronic health record, automated dispensing cabinets, barcode medication administration, and smart infusion pumps. Additionally, the department of pharmacy services provides services to Niswonger Children’s Hospital, an outpatient infusion center, and Ballad Health Cancer Care at JCMC.
Pharmacy services provided at JCMC include:
- 24/7 pharmacist code response
- Interprofessional rounding
- Decentralized pharmacy services
- Anticoagulation consults
- Adult parenteral nutrition consults
- Pharmacist-managed renal dosage adjustments
- Pharmacist-managed pharmacokinetic dosing (aminoglycosides and vancomycin)
- Patient medication counseling
- Drug information responses
JCMC serves as a practice site for introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences for Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University.
