The education philosophy of the AEGD program is to provide General Dentistry Resident education in a multidisciplinary environment that enhances and refines skills and knowledge obtained in dental school and provides practical experiences serving undeserved communities. An emphasis on professional ethics and community care will be at the forefront of every education opportunity.

The general dentistry residency program at Johnston Memorial Hospital is committed to providing advanced, innovative and specialized training in general dentistry, osteopathic family medicine and internal medicine.

Upon completion of residency training, the dentist will be well prepared to serve the community by practicing comprehensive dentistry and caring for diverse populations.

Benefits & salary

The AEGD dental residency program boasts a competitive base salary and excellent benefits.

PGY-1 AY: $59,160.09

Educational Stipend

In addition to the yearly salary, we provide our residents with an educational stipend to help cover the cost of educational materials and resources.

Program educational stipend: $500

We understand the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Our residents are granted twenty-one paid leave days per academic year. However, to ensure continuity of patient care and an optimal learning experience, there are guidelines around using paid time off:

Affiliation with Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Center

Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Center (AHCDC) is the main facility for clinic and didactic training for residents home based in southwest Virginia. The clinic provides opportunities to treat patients in general dentistry to underserved populations with a full range or dental services from general dentistry, restorative, endodontics and prosthodontics. This clinic is located outside of Abingdon, Virginia.

The 8,000 square foot clinic has 14 new dental operatories, including a new waiting room, a larger sterilization area, a new resident training room with audio visual equipment, a new laboratory as well as kitchen and study areas.
