Pharmacy Residency Program – Johnson City

Johnson City Medical Center

The Department of Pharmacy Services conducts a Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency and a Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Critical Care Pharmacy Residency at Johnson City Medical Center (JCMC). Residents will develop skills to successfully interact with interprofessional teams to optimize drug therapy, lead medication safety initiatives, and provide education. A variety of clinical experiences is offered with an emphasis on cardiology, critical care, infectious diseases, pediatrics, trauma, pharmacokinetics, oncology, and research.

Program details

Johnson City Medical Center (JCMC) is a 445-bed tertiary referral hospital located in Northeastern Tennessee. JCMC is a Level 1 Trauma Center, an Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center and has a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) located on campus at Niswonger Children’s Hospital.

Department of Pharmacy

The department of pharmacy has a progressive practice model with centralized inpatient clinical pharmacists, decentralized clinical pharmacists and clinical pharmacy specialists. Pharmacy practice is supported by computerized prescriber order entry, an integrated electronic health record, automated dispensing cabinets, barcode medication administration, and smart infusion pumps. Additionally, the department of pharmacy provides services to an outpatient infusion center, Niswonger Children’s Hospital, and Ballad Health Cancer Care at JCMC.

Pharmacy services provided at JCMC include:

  • 24/7 pharmacist code response
  • Interprofessional rounding
  • Decentralized pharmacy services
  • Anticoagulation consults
  • Adult parenteral nutrition consults
  • Pharmacist-managed renal dosage adjustments
  • Pharmacist-managed pharmacokinetic dosing (aminoglycosides and vancomycin)
  • Patient medication counseling
  • Drug information responses

JCMC serves as an introductory and advanced practice site for Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University.
