Why annual health screenings are important

It might be easy to skip an annual check-in because you’re not experiencing symptoms, but annual screenings can help find problems early on when they may be easier to treat. 

It all starts with a conversation between you and your primary care provider about what tests are right for you and when to begin screening.

Mammography icon

Mammograms

Ages: Annual mammograms are recommended between the ages of 40 and 54. For ages 55 and older, you can do yearly or bi-yearly screenings.
Risk factors: Family or personal history of breast cancer, dense breast tissue, early menstruation before age 12, and late menopause after age 55.

Cervical Cancer Screening Icon

Cervical cancer

Ages: Start with an HPV test at 21, repeating every five years until 65.
Risk factors: HPV, sexual history, poor hygiene, smoking, weakened immune system and prolonged use of oral contraceptive pills.

Colorectal Cancer Screening Icon

Colorectal cancer

Ages: Start regular screening at 45, and continue until 75.
Risk factors: Family history of adenomatous polyps or colorectal cancer.

Blood Pressure Screening Icon

High blood pressure

Ages: Regular screening recommended for ages 18 and up.
Risk factors: Unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use and alcohol use.

Diabetes Screening Icon

Diabetes

Ages: Screen for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in adults 35 to 70.
Risk factors: Parent or sibling with diabetes, physical inactivity, high blood pressure, polycystic ovary syndrome and history of heart disease
