New Niswonger Children’s Hospital, Children’s Miracle Network partnership

Miracles happen every day, and thanks to a new affiliation of Niswonger Children’s Hospital and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, this region will soon see even more.

 Niswonger Children’s Hospital is now the regional affiliate of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, which makes it the recipient of all local fundraising, retail partnerships and sponsorship support. The added resources will enable the children’s hospital to enhance the care it provides babies, children, teens and their families.

Bristol Regional offers safe sitter babysitting course

Bristol Regional Medical Center will be hosting a child care safety course on July 10-11, 2018 and again on August 1-2, 2018 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.  This course is available for girls and boys, ages 11-15 and curriculum is done through Safe Sitter Inc., a nationally-recognized organization whose mission is to provide life skills, safety skills, and child care training to all youth in order to build safer communities.

The course focuses on safety, child care, rescue and business skills. Class content includes:

B.E.A.R. Buddies in Carter County seeks volunteers

Even though schools are out for summer, Niswonger Children’s Hospital is helping local students stay on track with their reading development – with support from the community.

The B.E.A.R. Buddies (Being Engaged to Achieve Reading) program is seeking volunteers in Carter County to read with local elementary students who need to boost their skills. The students, who range from kindergarteners to third graders, are identified and referred by teachers if they’re six months or more behind their grade level for reading.

Ballad Health’s Wine Women & Shoes event raises $159,000 to enhance breast cancer screening programs

Wine Women & Shoes, hosted by Ballad Health Foundation, raised more than $159,000 to increase access to and affordability of breast cancer screenings in the region.

Nearly 800 local women will receive assistance through proceeds from this fourth annual event, held at the Virginian Golf Club. Wine Women & Shoes gives underserved women the ability to receive lifesaving exams and screenings, such as 3-D mammograms, breast MRI tests and genetic analyses and counseling.

Ethan Collins named chief nursing officer at Smyth County Community Hospital

Praised as both an excellent bedside nurse and an insightful leader, Ethan Collins has been appointed as Smyth County Community Hospital’s chief nursing officer.

He will also serve as chief nursing officer at Francis Marion Manor Health & Rehabilitation and Smyth County Home Health.

In this new role, Collins will oversee the nursing staff and ensure delivery of high-quality, patient-focused care. He also will join the hospital’s administrative team.

Health system forms board committee, including seasoned expert, to oversee implementation and development of advanced technology strategy

Covered Bridge 5k Run/3k Walk June 9 to benefit Sycamore Shoals Hospital; registration open

The annual Covered Bridge 5k Run and 3k Walk benefiting Sycamore Shoals Hospital is set for Saturday, June 9, at 8 a.m.

Parking and registration will be located in the heart of downtown at the City Hall parking lot on Hattie Avenue between Riverside Drive and Sycamore Street. Both races will finish at the same location after crossing through the historic covered bridge.
