Johnson City Medical Center emergency department expansion enters new phase

The expansion of Johnson City Medical Center’s emergency department is moving to its next phase, bringing temporary changes for patients and visitors.

As construction moves inside the hospital, the drop-off lane in front of the main hospital entrance will be reduced to one lane. This lane is reserved for patient drop-off and pick-up only. Deliveries can be made at the designated vendor delivery area at the back of the hospital. Traffic patterns along the main entrance driveway will be temporarily rerouted during this phase. ADA accessible parking will be available at the hospital’s main entrance.

Complimentary valet parking services are available during construction through a partnership with Beacon Hill Hospitality Group. The partnership will also offer directional assistance and additional security support needed as construction continues.

“A visit to the hospital can already be a stressful experience, and it’s our hope that the services offered by our partners with Beacon Hill will remove some of the stress of navigating our campus during construction,” said Johnson City Medical Center CEO Rebecca Beck. “While we’re working toward big changes, we want the patient and visitor experience to be as normal and uninterrupted as possible, and we’re grateful for a partnership that allows us to do exactly that.”

Additionally, during Phase 2, the discharge suite, formerly known as the hospitality suite, will move to the back of the hospital. Patients being discharged through this suite will be picked up at the entrance to the heart hospital instead of the main entrance. The heart hospital entrance can be accessed from State of Franklin Road. Patients will receive comprehensive discharge plans from their care team, including a pickup point for caregivers.

“This phase of construction will require some temporary adjustments by patients and visitors, but we’re excited for the vision to start taking shape,” said Dr. Beth Jackson, chief medical officer at Johnson City Medical Center. “We appreciate everyone’s patience through Phase 1, and while construction might be more noticeable during Phase 2, our team remains committed to providing high-quality care for our patients.”

The expansion is designed to meet the growing needs of patients across the Appalachian Highlands, with a focus on high-acuity and trauma care. The project reflects Johnson City Medical Center’s role as a Level 1 trauma center serving patients from throughout the region and multiple states.

Phase 1 of the project began in April and added 27 new parking spaces closer to the hospital entrance, making access easier for patients and visitors. Phase 3 of construction is expected to begin in 2027.

Once complete, the project will add 13,000 square feet to the facility. The scope of the project also includes an expanded and updated waiting area to prioritize an improved patient experience.
