What’s available at the Center for Spiritual Health

Field training

The Center for Spiritual Health serves as a field education site for seminary or divinity school students interested in spiritual care in a hospital setting and spiritual health.

This placement is called Clinical Supervised Ministry.

Over an 8- to 10-week period, it includes:

  • 100 hours of clinical work
  • About 50 hours of group meetings such as case conferences, seminars and supervisory sessions

Although this course is designed for the seminary student, we also accept individuals, after a group interview and consultation, who are interested in learning more about clinical pastoral education. This course also prepares students for Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).

Johnson City Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)

Johnson City Medical Center offers a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Program. This program combines the practice of spiritual care with qualified supervision and peer group reflection and utilizes the clinical (“action/reflection”) method of learning.

To help deepen and broaden the capacity to minister and to serve, CPE incorporates supervised reflection of the:

  • Student’s theology
  • Personal and clinical experience
  • Interpersonal dynamics
  • Spiritual pilgrimage

Program schedule

Our residency program operates on a staggered year, with new students accepted every calendar quarter.

We offer a summer intensive internship.

We also offer an extended unit of CPE that is especially designed for local pastors from September through May.

Accreditation

Johnson City Medical Center is accredited for Level I/Level II and Supervisory CPE.

CPE is fully accredited by The Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), Inc.
