Dr. Craig Schmalzried joins Ballad Health Medical Associates Family Medicine and Internal Medicine in Elizabethton

Craig Schmalzried, MD, has joined Ballad Health Medical Associates Family Medicine and Internal Medicine in Elizabethton, providing primary and preventive healthcare to patients of all ages.

A native of Texas, Dr. Schmalzried earned his medical degree from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas, and then completed a family medicine residency at Wheeling Hospital in Wheeling, West Virginia. After moving to the Appalachian Highlands, he practiced medicine for seventeen years before becoming part of Ballad Health. He joins Dr. Ryan Hackett, MD and Prabha Long, NP.

“I try to keep things simple for patients by keeping the cost down and working to find things that can help them slowly make improvements,” said Dr. Schmalzried, who is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. “And family medicine is the best way for me to do that.

“Patients know it’s their health, so it’s crucial for me to engage and listen to them. They’re the ones who ultimately make the decisions about their healthcare.”

Dr. Schmalzried treats a wide range of healthcare conditions, including general dermatology care, health screenings, management of chronic conditions, preventive care, same and next-day appointments, specialist referrals, vaccinations and annual physicals, wellness exams and women’s health. He is now accepting new patients.

Additionally, as part of Ballad Health Medical Associates, patients of Dr. Schmalzried have seamless access to all of the specialists, services and facilities of Ballad Health, including Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
