Ballad Health provides update on BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee

Ballad Health has been, and remains, committed to negotiating in good faith with our long-term partner, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, to reach an updated provider agreement for its commercial, Exchange, TennCare and Medicare Advantage products while protecting access to care for the people, employers and communities we serve. Currently, Ballad Health also uses BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee to provide administrative services for its own employees, who are self-insured by Ballad Health.

Health systems across the country, including Ballad Health, are facing several imminent challenges, including: an increasing number of individuals leaving the insurance exchanges and becoming uninsured due to the elimination of enhanced premium subsidies by the federal government; major cuts to the Medicaid directed payment program for hospitals, which disproportionately impact rural regions, set to begin in January 2028 under the provisions of HR 1, otherwise referred to as the “One Big Beautiful Bill”; rising inflationary costs of supplies and medications; and increased subsidies for physician services due to low reimbursement by insurers, Medicare and Medicaid, driven in large part by the low Medicare area wage index in our region combined with reported difficulties with insurance reimbursement by physicians and physician groups.

Healthcare costs are a shared challenge, and we respect the role of insurers in trying to keep costs under control. Ballad Health has worked closely with BlueCross on these initiatives, tying significant portions of our reimbursement to quality and cost performance. We expect to continue doing this in the future.

Ballad Health’s notice to negotiate a new agreement is a normal part of the negotiating process and should not be interpreted as a desire to end our relationship with BlueCross. Ballad Health expects to remain in-network with BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, and we remain at the table and committed to reaching a reasonable agreement that avoids disruption for BlueCross members.

While unexpected, if an agreement is not reached by Jan. 1, 2027, some members could lose in-network access to their preferred Ballad Health physicians and services. We will continue to update the community on our progress, and we expect BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee to do the same with respect to its members in compliance with all applicable regulations.
