What to expect during your mammogram
We understand that scheduling a mammogram can be a little intimidating, but we're here to guide you through the process and ensure your comfort every step of the way.
- Preparing for your appointment – Because the aluminum in deodorant mimics the appearance of calcifications, you're not allowed to wear deodorant to your appointment. Don't worry though, we offer complimentary deodorant so you can get right back in to the swing of your routine after your screening.
- Warm welcome – When you arrive at one of our state-of-the-art facilities, our friendly staff will greet you with a warm smile and make you feel right at home. You'll be asked to complete some paperwork, including your personal and medical information.
A screening mammogram takes about 15 to 20 minutes from start to finish, and we make every effort to make your experience as comfortable as possible.
- Getting changed – You'll be directed to a private changing room where you can change into a comfortable, full-coverage gown.
- Your exam – Your certified mammography technologist will gently place your breast on a special platform and use a compression paddle to flatten the breast tissue. While this compression may feel slightly uncomfortable, it's essential for obtaining the clearest images.
- Quick and efficient – The actual mammogram takes only a few minutes for each breast. Our skilled radiologists use the latest technology to capture high-quality images with minimal discomfort.
- For your doctor – We’ll send your results directly to the doctor of your choice after your screening.
- Your copy – If you’re a current Ballad Health patient, you can view your results on the Ballad Health app through your MyChart account. Your results will also be sent to you by mail within 30 days.
Sonograms & breast ultrasound
Breast ultrasounds use sound waves to produce a sonogram. This type of image gives us a look inside the breast, which allows your physician to check blood flow and detect abnormalities, such as cysts. We often use ultrasounds alongside a mammogram when a change is seen or felt in the breast or to determine if an abnormality is solid or fluid filled.

Bone density studies (DEXA)
Osteoporosis statistically affects women more than men, causing bones to become porous, brittle and more likely to break. Dual energy X-ray scans allow us to measure bone density to determine if you are at risk of fracture or osteoporosis.
