Orthopedic surgery patient at Sycamore Shoals Hospital

"It was an easy decision to have knee replacement surgery at nearby Sycamore Shoals Hospital," says Joyce, who’s lived in Elizabethton for 48 years. “For one thing, it’s closer; I can get there in about 15 minutes. And I just like a smaller hospital,”

Joyce, her parents and other family members have relied on Sycamore Shoals Hospital for a variety of health needs for years. “They have a lot of services and surgeries there. And the people are just so personable; they’ve always treated us good,” she says.

After her knee replacement surgery, Joyce stayed in the hospital for two days. “There was always somebody there if I needed anything,” she recalls. “I had a good experience, so I’ll go back and have surgery on my other knee there probably next year.”

Joyce says she feels having a local hospital is important for the community. “When it’s a matter of life and death, Sycamore Shoals Hospital is right there. Besides, I like the closeness of the people; they’re very caring and they treat you just like you’re family.”
