Program structure

Residents will be immersed in the hospital pharmacy experience and gain autonomy caring for patients. Orientation will occur in July and once complete, the resident will transition to core learning experiences. Core learning experiences will be three to six weeks in duration and include Family Medicine, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Ambulatory Care, Infectious Diseases, Pharmacy Practice Management and Hospital Pharmacy Practice. Elective learning experiences are available in a variety of patient care areas including outpatient infusion clinic, family medicine ambulatory care and other areas to meet the needs of each resident.

To maintain compliance with the accreditation standard, no more than one-third of the twelve-month PGY1 pharmacy residency program may deal with a specific patient disease state and population. Residents must spend two-thirds or more of the program in direct patient care activities.

Completion of an approved quality improvement or practice advancement project is a requirement of the residency program. A project mentor will be assigned and will assist the resident in project development and implementation. Formal presentation at a regional conference and a write-up of the project are required.
Residents will gain experience working in the central pharmacy every other weekend beginning in August. The resident will receive one weekday off for each weekend worked. Additionally, residents will work in a staffing role one major holiday (Thanksgiving or Christmas) and minor holiday (Labor Day or Memorial Day). Additional concentrated staffing learning experiences (Hospital Pharmacy Practice) may occur in the fall and spring.
As a part of the core Teaching and Precepting learning experience, residents will obtain a Teaching and Learning Certificate available through East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy. Resident preceptors serve as adjunct faculty and precept Doctor of Pharmacy students.
