Physician Profile

I received my medical degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and completed my internship and residency at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Family Medicine. I am originally from Roanoke, Virginia. After finishing my training in Virginia, I served four years in the Air Force in Texas. However, my wife and I missed the mountains and the four beautiful and distinct seasons of Virginia, so we decided to return to this area. While seeking out opportunities to do so, I joined the faculty of the James H. Quillen College of Medicine. The change of seasons, the mountains, the regional cultural and recreational offerings, and the general quality of life found in Northeast Tennessee are what I find most appealing about living here. I wanted to become a doctor for as long as I can remember. In medical school I found that I liked and enjoyed my training in all areas of medicine and wasn't sure I wanted to limit my practice to a single area. That’s why I chose family medicine, because it gave me the opportunity to do a little bit of anything and everything I wanted, whether delivering babies, performing minor office procedures or caring for patients of all ages and throughout all stages of their lives. My interest in family medicine was influenced most my residency Director and Assistant Director who were both old-fashioned country doctors I admired. What I enjoy most about being a physician is the interaction with patients and their families and the opportunity to share in both their good and not-so-good times (childbirth, dealing with serious illness and end-of-life issues.) I also enjoyed teaching medical students and residents the science and art of becoming a physician. My personal philosophy is to treat patients the way I would want to be treated, to always listen and to care. It's not only important to listen to patients; it is vital. One of my medical school mentors reminded us frequently, "Listen to your patients, they will tell you what's wrong with them." My wife, Rita, and I have been married for over 40 years. We have a lovely daughter who is grown, married and has two beautiful daughters of her own. They relocated from Chattanooga to Las Vegas about three years ago. When I’m not working, my wife and I enjoy working in our yard, traveling and going to the many regional festivals in this area. To de-stress, I enjoy reading, photography and hunting. We are also members of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, and I've had the opportunity to participate in several medical mission trips into central Mexico over the years.
