Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Niswonger Children's Hospital

The PICU, or Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, at Niswonger Children’s Hospital provides care for critically ill children with continuous monitoring.

The PICU consists of 10 private rooms with the latest in state-of-the-art technology. The PICU rooms are equipped to handle severe breathing problems and traumas, and patients are cared for by highly specialized and trained team members. The PICU manages care with a high nurse-to-patient ratio, which is determined based on each patient’s condition.

The PICU is led by pediatric intensivists (physicians who specialize in the care and treatment of patients in intensive care) and often serves as a home-away-from-home for chronically and critically ill children and their families. Children in the PICU receive specialized, attentive care from a specially trained healthcare team.
