Respiratory diagnostic tests and procedures near you

Our pulmonology clinic in Johnson City offers several minimally invasive outpatient tests and procedures, including robot-assisted bronchoscopy. These minimally invasive procedures may allow some patients to return home sooner and recover more quickly than they would after more invasive procedures.

ION Robotic Bronchoscopy

Ballad Health offers ION robotic bronchoscopy technology to patients throughout the Tri-Cities and Appalachian Highlands region. To get a more complete view of your lungs, your doctor may suggest ION robotic bronchoscopy. This technology may help your care team diagnose and treat certain lung conditions with fewer procedures.

Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and radial probe ultrasound (REBUS)

Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) provides minimally invasive, detailed imaging of your airways and lungs.

Radial probe ultrasound (REBUS), a type of EBUS, provides a 360-degree, high-resolution, real-time image of your lungs. This helps your provider get a closer look at areas that may need further evaluation.

Your pulmonologist might use EBUS or REBUS imaging to inspect infections, tumors, nodules or other areas of concern inside your lungs. During the procedure, your provider may also collect a small tissue sample for testing or mark an area to help guide treatment.

Thoracentesis

Thoracentesis is a common and minimally invasive procedure that drains excess fluid from the space between your lungs and chest wall through a small incision.

If your breathing becomes labored or you develop a cough related to pleural effusion—the buildup of fluid between your chest and lungs—your doctor might recommend thoracentesis.

Thoracentesis relieves chest pressure caused by a pleural effusion and may also help your provider learn more about what is causing the buildup of fluid.

What to expect during your first visit

Your pulmonologist will gather information about your symptoms, medical history, family history and physical condition.

You can prepare by gathering information related to:

  • Symptoms you have experienced, including how you’ve noticed them over time and what situations make them better or worse
  • Family history of chronic lung disease or respiratory symptoms
  • Medications you are currently taking
  • Health conditions you have now or have had in the past

Physical examinations your pulmonologist might complete during your first visit include:

  • Weight and height
  • Temperature
  • Oxygen levels
  • Blood pressure

Before your pulmonology visit, your primary care doctor or referring physician might have already completed blood testing, imaging or a pulmonary function assessment. Your pulmonologist will review this information, if available.

Your provider may also order lung tests or screenings, such as a chest X-ray, spirometry test, exercise oximetry test or a low-dose CT lung cancer screening. If you're at increased risk for lung cancer, your provider can help determine whether screening is right for you.
