Charles Raudat, DO

Physician Profile

For Dr. Charles Raudat, the greatest reward of being a heart surgeon usually comes in the form of a simple smile the day after surgery. “There is nothing like walking into the room of a patient you did surgery on the day before and seeing that person sitting up in bed, smiling, and wearing a look on their face that says, ‘thank you.’ It makes it worth doing this every day.” Dr. Raudat loves the instant gratification of seeing such quick results in his patients, and is grateful to the heart surgeon he met early in his medical studies who took him under wing and steered him toward a cardiothoracic surgery specialty. Despite long hours in the operating room, he says that another reason he enjoys his work is the close relationship he has with the team he works with each day. “That’s the biggest thing that attracted me here,” he says. “In my job it’s important to enjoy who you work with because you spend more time with them than you do your own family. Here, everybody in the operating room is family,” he says. “I would give them the shirt off my back and they would do the same for me.” When he does get time outside the hospital, Dr. Raudat says he loves that some of his favorite pastimes, such as hunting, fishing, hiking, and boating on Watauga Lake, are all activities he can do nearby. But, he claims it’s the people that keep him here. “My patients are thankful I am willing to take care of them. The team I work with is like my family. Generally, people are nicer here,” he says. “It makes it worth staying.” Dr. Charles Raudat is originally from St. Petersburg, Florida, but most recently worked as Director of Vascular Surgery at Arnot Medical Services in Elmira, New York. However, the opportunity to serve this community in a top notch medical system brought him to this area. His personal philosophy for treating patients is to treat the whole person and not just disease. Dr. Raudat has been married for over 20 years and has four children. Some of his favorite activities are sailing, diving and pheasant hunting. He is also very interested in cooking and has served as a Guest Chef for several different organizations.
