Lydia Grace is the kind of child who runs full tilt at life – loud and always pushing boundaries. “She’s my spicy one,” her mom, Caitlin, says. “She’s got a zest for life that won’t quit.” But in early January 2025, that unstoppable little girl, then 2 years old, suddenly couldn’t walk. After what seemed like a routine daycare illness, Lydia Grace woke up dizzy, vomiting and terrified to stand. Her mom, a clinical athletic trainer who works at outpatient therapy services, knew it was more than a virus.
Within 24 hours, Lydia Grace’s primary care doctor had her urgently transported by ambulance to Niswonger Children’s Hospital. “From the moment we arrived, it was all hands on deck,” says Caitlin, who followed the ambulance by car. Emergency medical technicians stayed with Lydia Grace until Caitlin arrived, ensuring she was never alone. That first night, a compassionate nurse prayed with the family, remained by their side through pediatric intensive care transfers and provided more than medical care — she offered comfort. “I will forever thank her,” Caitlin says.
“Niswonger Children's Hospital gave me my little girl back.”
Lydia Grace was eventually diagnosed with post-viral acute cerebellar ataxia, a rare autoimmune reaction that left her unable to walk or speak clearly. “It was terrifying,” her mom said. “Every nurse, doctor and tech fought for her.” After six days in the hospital, Lydia Grace was able to go home. Now she’s back, cheering on the sidelines as a Junior Cavalier cheerleader, running barefoot and climbing anything she can find. “I feel so blessed,” Caitlin says. “She’s back to being her spunky, fearless self. Niswonger Children’s Hospital gave me my little girl back."
