When Eden was 8, a small toy from Niswonger Children’s Hospital made a big impression. “She got a toy to play with in bed, and it really helped pass the time,” says her mom, Jayne. That simple gift inspired Eden to give back — and today, at age 10, she’s turning that inspiration into action.
In December 2023, Eden was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and spent three nights in the hospital. “The nurses and diabetic educators were wonderful,” Jayne says. “They taught us how to care for her, and they made her feel safe.”
Since then, Eden has learned to manage her insulin and adjust to life on a pump, and she has turned her experience into a way to help others. She’s organized toy drives to help other children in the hospital. One of her drives raised $1,400, which she used to buy toys she personally donated. “She wants to make sure there are always plenty of toys for kids when they come in,” Jayne says.

Eden also dreams of becoming a nurse to help children with diabetes, sharing the same care and support she received. “She’s approached everything with such a positive attitude,” Jayne says.
Eden’s story shows how a small act of kindness — such as receiving a toy — can inspire even a child to give back. Her determination to help others is a reminder of the difference the care at Niswonger Children’s Hospital can make.
