Averie’s Story

Despite facing more medical challenges in her young life than most people will ever know, 4-year-old Averie has a sense of determination that defies her tiny frame.

Born with an unbalanced translocation of chromosomes 7 and 15, she faces complex medical challenges, including developmental delays, pulmonary hypertension and congenital heart disease that has required three surgeries. Despite her small size – she’s no bigger than a 12-month-old – Averie’s personality fills every room she enters.

Three days a week, Averie receives outpatient therapy at Niswonger Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Rehabilitation & Physical Therapy Clinic, where she works closely with physical therapist Travis Coombs. “Travis has been with Averie from the very beginning,” says her mom, Sheila. “She’s done wonders. She understands complex kids, knows when to push and when to protect. Averie wouldn’t be where she is without her.”

Averie’s progress is undeniable. She was once withdrawn and quiet, but now lights up the room with her big spirit and smile. “She might be tiny, but she lets the world know she’s here,” her mom says.

Niswonger Children’s pediatric therapy department, with its caring staff and newly expanded equipment, has become an essential part of Averie’s world. “We followed Travis to Niswonger. We knew Averie needed the resources they could provide,” Sheila says. “They are truly exceptional.”

Through it all, Averie remains joyful and brave. “Kids like Averie, they live a different life,” Sheila says. “The things they live with, they learn to conquer early on. The Lord prepares them for what they will have to go through in life.”
