How to get started with physical therapy

Do I need a referral?

Many patients begin outpatient therapy with a doctor’s referral, though insurance requirements may vary. If you have questions about coverage, please contact your insurance provider.

We recommend that you speak with your doctor or provider about any conditions you have that may cause pain or restrict your activities.

Scheduling an appointment

Once your doctor provides a referral, you or your provider's office can contact our clinic directly to schedule your first visit.

Once you've scheduled your first visit, you can use the Ballad Health app to view and manage your healthcare appointments, access visit details and keep your schedule organized in one convenient place.

Preparing for your first visit

Please arrive about 15 minutes prior to your scheduled visit to complete new patient paperwork. You should also bring your physician order for therapy, insurance card and a photo ID.

We also recommend you wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement. You can expect to begin treatment on the same day as your initial visit and evaluation.

Frequently asked questions about physical therapy

Physical therapy helps people move more comfortably and safely through guided exercises and hands-on care.

A physical therapist helps people move better, feel stronger and manage pain. Our therapists create personalized treatment plans with exercises, hands-on care and education to help you improve your strength, balance and flexibility. Physical therapists also help patients who are recovering after an injury or surgery.

Some exercises may feel challenging, but therapy should not cause sharp pain. Your therapist will work with you at a safe pace that aligns with your needs.

Yes. Physical therapy is often part of a gentle, movement-based approach to managing pain. We recommend discussing your pain with your provider to see if physical therapy is the right next step for you.

Our office is on the second floor of the YMCA. After coming up the steps, take a left turn and walk toward the pool and you’ll find our office on the left.

We have two reserved parking spaces at the YMCA for our clinic. They are located on the front row of parking to the left of the building entrance. You should see signs for the designated parking spots.

Some patients feel better after a few visits, while others feel improvements gradually. Your therapist will track your progress and adjust your plan as needed.
