Family Birth Center – 423-302-1436

The Family Birth Center at Franklin Woods Community Hospital (FWCH) has 20 private rooms, 12 of which are designed for labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum stays (LDRP). The remaining eight rooms serve to care for gynecology patients. Traditional nurses’ stations have been replaced with “touchdown stations” that make communication with family members more inviting. As of December 2016, the Family Birth Center became the first hospital in Tennessee to earn Perinatal Care Certification from The Joint Commission. The certification program recognizes Joint Commission-accredited hospitals committed to achieving integrated, coordinated and patient-centered care for mothers and their newborns.

A conference room provides training space for breastfeeding classes, sibling classes and more, as well as departmental education sessions. Patients can also learn important skills like infant CPR and giving baby a bath by attending these educational sessions. The staff of the Family Birth Center at FWCH focuses on providing as much one-on-one care and education as possible to make the parents confident about taking care of their baby once they leave the hospital.

Our nurses focus on caring for mother and baby as one unit, and encourage the parents to spend as much time as possible with the baby. This helps promote breastfeeding and a positive bonding experience, which helps create a smooth transition when the parents and baby leave the hospital. Parents find that this decreases their anxiety about caring for the baby at home.

Cesarean sections are performed in the two operating room suites in the Family Birth Center, and mothers who have C-sections can recover right in their private rooms.

While mothers are encouraged to keep the baby in their room as much as possible, the nursery is outfitted with 16 bassinets. The reception area looks out onto a healing garden.
