Physician Profile

I began practicing in this area in 1982 after my residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem. I received my medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. Originally I’m from Sturbridge, Massachusetts, but after attending school in this area, I stayed because of the people and the beautiful countryside. I wanted to become a doctor simply because I like helping people, and I have been given this great opportunity to try and help as many people as I can. Over the years it has become clear that doctors should always listen to their patients because they might just know what they are talking about. One big influence in my medical career has been Jack Garnison, MD, a family physician in Virginia Beach. I have been married to my wife, Hope, for 28 years. We have two grown children, Austin and Tanner. I also have two children from a previous marriage, Jeff and Mike. When I am not working, I enjoy exercising, traveling and listening to some wonderful music from this area. My interests outside the medical field extend to playwrighting. Three of my plays have been produced at the Barter Theatre: “Keep on the Sunny Side,” “Man of Constant Sorrow” and “America’s Blue Soldier.” I am also an active member of the Chilhowie Christian Church.
