Is lack of sleep depriving your child of success?

Lack of quality sleep can cause a myriad of problems, and not just in adults.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, children and teens need proper amounts of sleep to function normally and develop properly.

In our increasingly hectic world, a good night’s sleep is getting harder to come by, and there are many factors – diet, chemical agents (including caffeine), stress, untreated sleep disorders – that are depriving our kids of proper sleep.

How do I know if my child isn’t getting enough sleep?

Signs that your child is insufficiently rested include:

  • Moodiness or irritability
  • Impulsiveness
  • Clumsiness
  • Anxiety
  • Learning and memory problems
  • Shortened attention span
  • Falling asleep in class
  • Hyperactivity
  • Frequent illnesses (tired body = weaker immune system)

Remember: the effects of sleep deprivation are cumulative. The longer it is allowed to continue, the more it can negatively affect your child.
