Internal Medicine Residency Curriculum – Norton

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Norton Community Hospital is a traditional track three-year training program.

PGY 1

  • 16 weeks of inpatient medicine
  • 4 weeks of night medicine float
  • 4 weeks ICU
  • 4 weeks of cardiology
  • 4 weeks of pulmonology
  • 4 weeks of emergency medicine
  • 4 weeks of nephrology
  • 4 weeks of infectious disease
  • 4 weeks research/quality improvement
  • 4 weeks of electives

PGY 2

  • 12 weeks of inpatient medicine
  • 4 weeks of night medicine float
  • 4 weeks of rehabilitative/geriatrics
  • 4 weeks of ICU
  • 4 weeks in the continuity clinic
  • 4 weeks of cardiology
  • 4 weeks of gastroenterology
  • 4 weeks of neurology
  • 4 weeks of addiction
  • 4 weeks of hematology/oncology
  • 8 weeks of electives (med)

PGY 3

  • 12 weeks of inpatient medicine
  • 8 weeks of medicine night float
  • 4 weeks of rehabilitative/geriatrics
  • 4 weeks of ICU
  • 4 weeks of endocrinology
  • 4 weeks of rheumatology
  • 4 weeks of elective (med)

Didactic Schedule

  • Guidelines – Review of Society Guidelines (i.e. IDSA, ACC, CHEST) pertinent to Internal Medicine
  • Ambulatory Medicine Series – Review over clinical pearls and developing framework for common problems encountered in the outpatient setting.
  • Board Review – Using available, high yield, resources in preparation for the board exam (New England Journal, MKSAP, MedStudy, ACP Board Review, and/or Harvard Board Review)
  • ABIM Topic – Outlined topic based upon the ABIM Blueprint
  • More than Medicine – Topics covered outside of traditional medicine (billing, note writing, financial planning, hospice, resources, etc.)

  • Morning Report – Case based “chalk talks” every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning.
  • ICU Didactics – Online modules providing case based questions, readings, and listening material to enhance your learning experience. (further subjects under construction)
  • Backup Boot Camp – intense review of common occurrences within the hospital
  • Annual Board Review for PGY 3 residents

  • Medication Assistant Treatment certification
