About Holston Valley Medical Center

Partnering with and serving the Kingsport community for more than 80 years, Holston Valley is a 505-bed facility which houses a Level III trauma center and high quality, nationally recognized care.

More than 450 board-certified or board-eligible physicians provide exceptional care in our hospital.

Pharmacy services

Holston Valley’s department of pharmacy services provides drug information, and therapeutic drug dosing and monitoring for all patients at HVMC and for patients at seven other Tennessee-based Ballad Health facilities.

The central pharmacy serves the hospital 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. The central pharmacy is supported by a surgical satellite pharmacy and decentralized pharmacists in the emergency department, medical and cardiac critical care areas, and various acute care areas.
The surgical satellite pharmacy is open 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, and the emergency department is staffed by a pharmacist 20 hours per day, 7 days per week. The medical ICU is staffed 10 hours per day, 7 days per week, and other acute care areas are staffed 8 hours per day, 5 days per week.

All pharmacists provide pharmaceutical care to patients through appropriate, accurate, and timely dispensing of medications. In providing this care, pharmacists assess patient care requirements, provide clinical assessment of the medication-related problems, assess, recommend, and monitor medication regimens, and review patient medical records for additional opportunities for intervention.

Decentralized pharmacists and clinical specialists provide additional direct patient care and are members of multi-disciplinary medical teams throughout HVMC. They collaborate with the medical team to optimize medication therapy and provide many services including:

  • appropriate drug therapy selection
  • drug information
  • drug stewardship
  • emergency code participation and facilitation
  • medication reconciliation
  • patient medication discharge education
  • therapeutic drug dosing and monitoring
