Boots & Bow Ties fundraiser scheduled for May 18

Johnston Memorial Hospital Foundation to round up money for a dental residency program and clinic

Kick up your heels for a night of boot-scootin’, barbecue and bidding at Johnston Memorial Hospital Foundation’s annual Boots & Bow Ties fundraiser.

The event starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at Woodbrook Farms in Abingdon. Tickets are $75 per person.

A buffet of chicken, brisket and Southern-style fixins will be catered by Pratt’s BBQ. DanJoe Music for the Community – a pair of local DJs – will offer up tunes to get your two-step on.

Silent and live auctions will provide items up for bidding, such as a stay at a Hilton Head resort for seven days and a fly-fishing trip with an expert guide from the South Holston River Company.

Proceeds from this year’s event will help support a new dental residency program at Johnston Memorial and a clinic that will provide dental services to the underserved population. The dire need for dental care in Southwest Virginia was one of the catalysts for Johnston Memorial to launch a dental residency program that will offer advanced training to dentists who have obtained licensure and are interested in furthering their education with an Advanced Education In General Dentistry.

Through a partnership with South Holston Dental Designs, Dr. Michael McCracken, Dr. Scott Miller, Dr. Chris Davenport and Mission Dental Virginia, the residency program will establish the Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Center, where dental residents will provide a variety of services, including preventive care such as sealants, as well as extractions and restorative care like crowns, fillings and dentures. The dental care will be offered on a sliding scale to uninsured community members in need throughout Southwest Virginia.

“Boots & Bow Ties is such a fun and meaningful event, and will benefit so many people in this region,” said Dr. Scott Miller, who will be the director of the Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Center and advising dentist to the residents of the dental program. “These dental services are much-needed, and by supporting Boots & Bow Ties, you are helping our community members get the dental care they so desperately need.”

Pending approval from the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), the residency will begin in August 2019. In the coming months, a site will be identified for the future clinic.
